Project Literacy
1999 National Literacy Act
“Literacy is . . . an individual’s ability to read, write, and speak in English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” To support this act, UVdN has partnered with Project Literacy to meet the wants, needs and goals of our consumers. Project Literacy is an adult literacy program for persons who are experiencing educational barriers to employment or educational goals. |
Project Literacy is a FREE one-on-one tutoring program for adults, based in downtown Roseburg. We offer personalized one-on-one TUTORING in reading, writing, math, GED preparation, and English as a Second Language (ESL). We use various teaching materials including but not limited to Reading Horizons, Challenger, Voyager, Laubach Way to Reading, GED prep books with flashcards, various math books and materials and a computer lab for typing, resume writing, etc.
Students are assessed and placed with a tutor. Services may take place in small group or one on one in a private setting. Students who complete their educational goals often complete their GED and/or enroll in college or join the workforce. They will see many improvements in their lives as well. Their health can improve, they can get a better paying job, or maybe they will learn to read a driver's manual to obtain a driver's license so they can then expand their own horizons with a lot more opportunities for housing, jobs, further education, or simply function through learning to read a menu and obtain that independence when out to eat.
